The World Surf League Championship Tour has announced it will return to Manu Bay in 2027, following the successful debut of the New Zealand Pro in Whāingaroa Raglan earlier this year.
The event is being supported by the New Zealand Government through its Events Attraction Package, with the WSL confirming the partnership will continue for a second year.
WSL APAC President Andrew Stark says Raglan made a strong impression during its first Championship Tour event.
“Raglan is a truly special place, with a deep surfing heritage, world-class waves and an incredibly passionate local community, and after an amazing event in 2026, we know the athletes and fans will embrace the opportunity to experience it again.”
The announcement follows the release of local community and economic impact research looking at how the inaugural event affected Whāingaroa.
The Go Raglan community impact study gathered feedback from 59 local businesses, 351 residents and stakeholder interviews, finding strong overall support for the event alongside opportunities for greater local involvement in future years. Community pride and rangatahi engagement were among the positive themes identified.
Separate Marketview analysis found economic benefits were strongest in the accommodation and hospitality sectors.
Go Raglan representative Charlie Young says confirmation of the event’s return provides an opportunity to build on the first year.
“It’s fantastic to see the Championship Tour returning to Whāingaroa. We now have a much clearer picture of the economic and community impact of the first event, as well as some really useful feedback to help shape 2027.
“There’s a great opportunity to build on the momentum, involve the community early and create more ways for local businesses, organisations, rangatahi and residents to be part of the event.”
The 2026 New Zealand Pro also provided opportunities for Kiwi surfers Billy Stairmand, Alani Morse and Tom Butland to compete against the world’s best at Manu Bay.
The WSL has confirmed two New Zealand surfers will again receive wildcard places through a local trials event in 2027.
The full 2027 Championship Tour schedule, including dates for the New Zealand Pro, will be announced later this year.
