The Stoned Cow Café is a charming, family-run establishment that offers much more than just delicious food and great coffee—it’s a hub for creativity, connection, and community. Owned and operated by Samantha and Shaun Payne, the café has an intriguing backstory, unique offerings, and a mission to bring people together in a relaxed, welcoming environment.

Have you ever wondered how The Stoned Cow got its quirky name? It all started when Samantha painted a cow on a beach—an unconventional choice that led to a humorous twist. A potential client jokingly remarked that the cow looked “stoned” and suggested adding a certain accessory to complete the look. Samantha obliged, and the painting sold. Later, during New Zealand’s marijuana referendum, the playful and memorable name was chosen for the café to bring smiles to people’s faces.

Originally located in Auckland, The Stoned Cow began as a community-focused café where the Paynes knew every customer by name and preference. However, as the business grew, it became increasingly hectic. The move to Raglan was inspired by a desire for a better lifestyle, a close-knit community, and improved opportunities for the family’s children.

For Samantha, the transition also meant time to indulge her passion for painting. In Auckland, her busy schedule rarely allowed time for creativity, but Raglan offered the chance to create a dedicated space for art. Today, all the paintings displayed in the café are Samantha’s works, inspired by her love for Africa.

The Stoned Cow’s point of difference is the blend of delicious food, artwork, and a calendar packed with engaging events. Everything on the menu is homemade, with Samantha and her eldest daughter baking  the fare daily. Listening to customer feedback, the café has tailored its offerings to include smaller portions, ideal for parents with young children or older customers.

The café’s events bring the community together, offering something for everyone. Open Mic Nights are a hit, especially with younger talent, as the café provides a safe, alcohol-free venue for jamming and performing. Other creative evenings include “Sip and Paint” and “Sip and Clay,” where Samantha guides participants through artistic projects, helping them unlock their creativity in a fun and relaxed setting.

For quieter days, the café hosts a book club, knitting group, and even board game nights. A small library is available for browsing, reinforcing the café’s role as a community hub.

The Payne family’s dedication to making the café a welcoming space is evident in everything they do. The three children play active roles in the business, and the staff’s camaraderie adds to the unique atmosphere. With its dog-friendly policy, art room for kids, and strong ties to the local community, The Stoned Cow has become a favourite spot for locals and visitors alike.

Establishing a new business in Raglan came with its challenges, but the support of the local community—and the Raglan iHub—has been invaluable. As a resource for businesses and visitors, the iHub connects people with places of interest, events, and local services.
