Cycling in Raglan
Raglan is a great place to explore by bike or e-bike, with a mix of coastal views, harbour rides, quiet backroads and scenic climbs. Whether you’re after a relaxed cruise or a more challenging ride, there are options for all levels.
Always take care on roads, be mindful of traffic, and check your bike (especially e-bike battery levels) before heading out.
Easy to intermediate rides
Town to Wharf loop
Start in Bow Street and ride to the end, then turn right along Cliff and Puriri Streets. Turn left into Wallis Street and head towards the Wharf, looping around the wharf buildings.
Return along Wallis Street and turn left into Government Road. Note: this section is very steep, especially on a standard push bike.
Continue to the intersection with Manukau Road, turn left into Bay View Road, then right into Cambrae Road. Follow this to Simon Street, head up the hill, then turn into Lorenzen Bay Road.
You can stop for a swim at Lorenzen Bay or continue via Nikau Place onto the shared cycle and walking path to Greenslade Road. From here, there is beach access down to Moonlight Bay.
Important: It is safer to return the same way, as Greenslade Road is not suitable for cycling.
Domain, airfield and Wainui ride
A scenic ride linking town, the airfield and Raglan’s west coast beaches.
Start near the fire station and head towards the pedestrian bridge. Cross over and join the cycle path through the domain, following it alongside the campground and airfield.
Cross the bridge and turn right into Nihinihi Road. At the end, head up the hill, then left into Uenuku Road, and take the first right to join the cycle path along Wainui Road.
From here you can:
- Turn right into Riria Kereopa Memorial Drive and continue to Wainamu Beach
- Or continue along the path to Wainui Bush Park Reserve, riding through to Ngarunui Beach
At the top of the hill, turn right for panoramic views over Ngarunui Beach, then return the same way.
Rangitahi Peninsula loop
Follow the same route over the pedestrian bridge and along the airfield, then turn right into Nihinihi Road and left into Tahuna Avenue.
At the top, cross Wainui Road into Opotoru Road and follow the cycle path over the bridge into the Rangitahi subdivision.
This area has wide roads, shared paths, and views of Mt Karioi and the harbour. You’ll also find The Hut Café, open most days until lunchtime.
Advanced rides
Around Mt Karioi (approx. 42 km)
A challenging but rewarding loop for experienced cyclists.
Head out of town along Wainui Road, cross the one-lane bridge, then take Te Hutewai Road. Continue uphill and turn into Waimangu Road (gravel), then right into Ruapuke Road.
This becomes Whaanga Road, taking you around Mt Karioi past Ruapuke Beach and Te Toto Gorge, before reconnecting with Wainui Road near Whale Bay.
Return via Manu Bay and back into Raglan.
Te Uku Windfarm ride (approx. 60 km return)
Head out via Wainui Road and Te Hutewai Road, then turn right onto Te Mata Road. Follow signs towards Kawhia Road and Bridal Veil Falls.
Just past the falls car park, you’ll find the turnoff to the Pipiwharauroa Walking and Cycle Trail, which leads towards the windfarm.
- Approx. 20 km to the trail start
- Trail itself is 9 km (18 km return)
Good battery management is essential for e-bikes.
Before you ride
- Check your brakes, tyres and battery (if using an e-bike)
- Take water, sun protection and layers
- Be aware of narrow roads and local traffic
- Respect shared paths and pedestrians
